Isaru was born among the Yosen of Rao as a Yorei – as a being possessing abilities thought to be gifts from the goddess Aorei by the believers, and by scientists as natural abilities they had to analyze, understand, and ultimately pursue until death.

And it is a cure to death which the scientists sought, through the meticulous analysis and torture of the Yorei. Isaru, like so many before her, eventally ended up in the metal city of Zabeth where she suffered innumerable experiments, all meant to discover what she never understood: her connection to divinity.

One day, Zabeth crumbled. On that day, a terrible darkness arose from its very core and devoured all inhabitants of a city which, it was discovered, had not quite been a city at all. Isaru, along with other experiments, was saved and dragged to the ferry. Alas, she did not survive the trip.

A fact Isaru would never know for, one day, she awoke. She had changed. Not only was she now devoid of colour, she also found herself devoid of mortality… and of solitude. Haunted by a version of herself, Isaru wandered the rebuilt roads of Rao, unsure of everything that had passed, and of everything she had become.

Clarity would not come to her until she’d meet two others of what she’d discover to be her kind. From then on, her life as a Yorei experiment was over.

All that remained, now, was the power of Death.
